Outokumpu Degerfors Järnverk are nominated to an award for the usage of Plaståtervinning i Wermland AB's environmentally friendly bridge sleeper as underlay at the manufacturing of their stainless steel ingots.
Each 6 metre bridge sleeper weighs 600 kg and encases 1620 kg CO2 eqvivalents in comparison to if the packaging waste which they are made of was burnt. A substancial amount of CO2 is stored long-term in this way.
The nomination is for the 2020 Steelie Award from global organisation World Steel Association.
